Beyond the Channel

Across oceans. Beyond myself.

Story

Canoe is not just about racing.

When I was in fifth grade, I joined OCEAN VAʻA, an outrigger canoe club based in Hayama, Kanagawa. That is where I learned many things.

That our ancestors paddled from island to island. That speed is not everything. That we move with the ocean, not against it.

There are more things than I can write here.

Over the past year, I have traveled to Hawaii and Hong Kong. A few days before each race, paddlers from around the world begin to arrive. People welcome each other.

They paddle out with the sunrise, then return to their own lives.

Some families have been paddling for generations. For them, paddling is part of life.

Canoe is not only about competition. It carries different cultures, people, and ways of living.

I want to see it, feel it, experience it, and share it with people in Japan.

I want to share what I have experienced abroad with the people who paddle in Japan.

Origin

I was born in 2010. I am 16 years old.

When I was young, I had one-third of my right lung removed because of a lung abscess.

When I was in first grade, I moved from Kugenuma to Hayama and started surfing.

Through OCEAN VAʻA, I started paddling canoe and SUP.

At 12, I began racing, and little by little, I started taking on races around the world.

I continue to train in the ocean of Hayama, working every day to become stronger.

A photo with my mentor, Kenny Kaneko.

This photo was taken after finishing Kaiwi Solo 2025.

The things Kenny taught me, and the things I learned from the ocean — I felt like I was able to give a little of them back in this race.

Challenge 2026

To become an athlete who can compete on the world stage, beyond who I was last year.

To analyze myself, find my challenges, and keep improving.

Not just paddling harder, but paddling with feeling and thought.

To finish in the Top 25 at Kaiwi Solo.

To travel the world, experience different canoe cultures, and share them with others.
